A stable, demographically representative economic market in South Africa is fundamental to the sustainability of the business and our future growth. BSi Steel has embraced transformation within the organisation and we are proud to have been independently rated by BDO South Africa as a LEVEL 4 BBBEE contributor as of 28 September 2023. In order to continue to achieve an improved rating we have prioritised skills development initiatives (learnerships, internships, experiential learning and disabled training) as well as initiated synergistic enterprise development projects that feed directly into the business. SOLAR PROJECT
At BSi Steel, we’re committed to sustainability. Our solar panels are generating significant results, with an average of 32% of our monthly electricity needs being met through solar power. This dedication to renewable energy has had a real impact – thus far, we surpassed thousands of tons in carbon emissions saved! And we’re not stopping there. The addition of battery storage, which will allow us to further reduce our environmental footprint and solidify our position as a leader in sustainable steel production.
SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT
Working with steel products and heavy machinery requires that we put safety first at all times. Our safety procedures, fully audited in 2023, are now in full swing across every operational region. Health and Safety is a priority for our executive committee and regular quarterly updates are taken to main board meetings. Each of our bases has a dedicated health and safety committee that, together with the site management team, ensures the effective implementation of a comprehensive, proactive safety campaign across all regions. All staff members now undergo a thorough safety induction and receive regular training focused on fostering safety-first behaviours.
In addition, we take care of employee well-being by offering a wellness campaign, free medical testing, mobile clinic services, stress management, counselling, HIV and AIDS awareness and advice on matters of personal finance.
The group has an environmental policy which identifies areas in which the group and its employees can assist in reducing our impact on the environment.
