Cut To Length

Take a coil of steel, uncoil it and then cut. If the coil is cut longitudinally across, the full width of the coil is cut to various lengths and is known as cut to length.

We comply with ISO 9001/2000 Quality standards.

  • Part of the BSi Steel group is a company called Shearcut which offers various services that form part of a steel processing line. The line is broken into various sections. One of those sections is the cut to length process that allows BSi Steel to cut steel sheet into the required length.
  • Shearcut’s cut to length service can handle a full range of materials and thicknesses ranging from 0,3mm to 3,5mm and varying output lengths of +-4000mm.
  • The minimum and maximum of the Shearcut steel processing line:
Then minimum length that can be cut on the Shearcut steel processing line is 300mm for blanking and CTL. It is not possible to get the pallet that the blank falls on closer to the Shear. This is a plant specification.
The maximum length of steel that can be cut on the Shearcut steel processing line is 6000mm. The reason for this limitation is that the stacker can handle 3700mm, if Shearcut cuts longer than 3700mm they have to open the frame on the stacker and the length cut exceeding 3700mm would not be guided and would hang over the back of the stacker.
  • The width of the Shearcut steel processing line:
The minimum width that can be cut on the Shearcut steel processing line is 380mm, this is due to plant design specification. The maximum width that can cut on the Shearcut steel processing line is 1800mm; this is also due to plant design specification.
  • Edge trimming:
The purpose of edge trimming is to ensure that accurate blanking sizes are maintained. If we do not edge trim for example on a 10 slit blanking order the inner 8 slits will be within tolerance but we cannot guarantee the tolerance on the outer two cuts due to the mill edge of the coils, the coils do move during processing.
  • Trim:
What Shearcut does with the trim is we automatically roles the edge trim onto the scrap winder and it is then sold as scrap.
The maximum number of blanking sizes
2.5mm – 8 blades 7 accurate blanks
2 mm – 9 blades 8 accurate blanks
1.6mm – 12 blades 11 accurate blanks
0.5 – 1.2mm – 14 blades 13 accurate blanks
  • The minimum width per blank:
The minimum width per blank on the Shearcut steel processing line is 76mm.
  • The maximum width per blank:
The maximum width per blank on the Shearcut steel processing line is 1800mm.
  • The minimum length per blank:
The minimum length per blank on the Shearcut steel processing line is 300mm for blanking and CTL.
  • Shearcut’s packaging limitations:
The maximum amount that can be packaged is 3500kg per pallet. This is dependent on the length of the sheet.
  • Minimum orders in terms of tonnage:
Shearcut does not have a minimum order cap but there is a fee of R 250 per restrap and R 250 for coils under 5 tons.
  • Additional costing:
There are additional costs for re-strapping coils, small coils and coil movements. R 250 per coil for re-strapping and coils under 5 tons and R 25 per ton for coil being moved from Shearcut.
